What is Trauma?

When you are experiencing a stressful, frightening or distressing situation or event this is is referred to as trauma.  When you think about trauma that can effect our mental and physical wellness in terms of emotional or psychological trauma within policing we'd think about:

​

  1. how we have been affect by a traumatic incident which we have experienced. 

  2. traumatic events could have happened at any age before policing, but during our tour of duty police officers are exposes to many more traumatic incidents than the average person and these can cause long-lasting harm, 

  3. every member of the police will react differently to trauma some may notice the impact within hours others may start feeling them many years down the line.

There are many different situations that can trigger trauma which could be feeling: 

​

  • frightened

  • under threat

  • humiliated

  • rejected

  • abandoned

  • invalidated

  • unsafe

  • unsupported

  • trapped

  • ashamed

  • powerless.

How can trauma happen?

There are many ways that can cause trauma some of these could be:

​

  • one-off or ongoing events

  • being directly harmed

  • witnessing harm to someone else

  • living in a traumatic atmosphere

  • being affected by trauma in a family or community.
